“Bridesmaids” star Kristen Wiig will co-star with Robert De Niro in the drama “The Comedian,” which will be directed by Sean Penn.

Entertainment Weekly reported that according to a film synopsis by FilmNation, De Niro will play Jackie Burke, a comic who once had a prominent TV character but is now trying to revive his career. The synopsis reads: “After being sentenced to community service for hitting an audience member in the head with his microphone, Jackie meets Harmony (Wiig), a dazzling and defiant redhead who turns his life sideways.”

Filming is expected to begin this spring.

As a rule of thumb, I can’t stand Saturday Night Live and the comedians who come from it. With that being said, once in a while someone breaks through, shows they can do so much more than what they’ve been limited to in the past. I saw Vin Diesel in a drama once, and afterwards I turned to my sister, who I was watching the film with, and said, “Vin Diesel is one of the best actors out there. He can do comedy, he can do action, and apparently he can do drama too.” The point is that you just don’t know until you give someone a chance. And while I don’t know much about Sean Penn as a director, I don’t think he’d take such a risk if he didn’t see potential in Wiig.
